Personal:

Born 1972 in north central Wisconsin

Married for 11 yrs to very supportive non-running wife. Two children : Fiona, 6 (in picture) and Elliott (2 yrs)

Co-Race Director of  Delano Park 12 Hour Run (www.delano12.com). President of River City Runners (www.rivercityrunners.org)

3 cats and 1 dog (chocolate lab)

In high school, I was an slightly overweight , badly asthmatic J.V. cross country runner.  I enjoyed being part of the team but never excelled.   The summer after my freshman year in college I decided to run a marathon.  6 weeks later I ran a 3:11 at Grandma's Marathon in Duluth (1991) and I was hooked on long distance running where my asthma wasn't as much of a factor.

Easy run on the trails and roads at work.   Did one mile at marathon pace  and pushed a couple hills.  Mostly goofing around.  didn't feel like running too hard today.   Got in  5 X 20 Pushups.  Was easier than last week.

Hi! Nice to see a fellow "southerner" on here... if that's what you want to consider Tallahassee, I'm not really sure what it is :) I see that you have run a 50k and was wondering if you had any advice. I am interested in running a 50k after running a marathon. If I run my marathon hard, do you think I could run a 50k "easy" about a month or so later? Or would you not recommend doing that? (Should I just wait until next season and then run a slow marathon to train for a 50k?) I would appreciate any thoughts!!

Good run... sometimes those "goofing off" runs are necessary :)

I think a month is plenty of time. I did a 3:03 marathon at Mercedes Marathon once and followed it 3 wks later at the Black Warrior 50k and had my second fastest 50k (4:14). Just listen to your body and be prepared to skip the 50k if you are nursing an injury.

I've met a few runners from your neck of the woods: Gary Griffin and Jack McDermott. Both great ultrarunners. There is also a runner from Decatur,AL that is a freshman running at FSU- Jennifer Dunn. I've wanted to come down and run Gary's 50k at Wakulla for quite awhile but it is always the same day as our local marathon (Rocket City) . Some day i will.

After spending some time near Tallahassee this summer, I was really impressed with the Gulf Winds Track Club, which I think was centered in Tallahassee. From what I saw, the running scene down there is great, and if I wind up back down there this coming summer, I'm really looking forward to hooking back up with the folks there.

Great, that's exactly what I wanted to hear! If I qualify for Boston I won't do it because it won't give me enough time to recover, but if I don't at least I have something else to look forward too! I think the 50k you are talking about is a week after my race, so maybe in 2009!

I'm a member of Gulf Winds Track Club and I love it. I run intervals with the club every Tuesday night, and any given week we will have 20-30 people of all ages and speeds to run them. We have tons of races as well, and they really know how to run them. Tallahassee has the best running community I have ever seen... especially after coming from Mississippi, I had trouble finding any races there! It makes it way easier to stay on track when you feel obligated to go to interval workouts and such. I owe a lot to them.

So I think I'm going to be in town this weekend; anyone up for an easy 20?

From schotz on Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 08:08:25

I'm doing 20+ on Friday. (Scenic route to and from work). I did want to do at least 10 on Saturday and then somemore on Sunday. I think Elmore is racing Saturday but he may be up to something Sunday morning before Church. Saturday, I think I'll plan to run over to Wilson Morgan and do some laps. Probably leave the house around 6-6:30am.
