In high school, I was an slightly overweight , badly asthmatic J.V. cross country runner.  I enjoyed being part of the team but never excelled.   The summer after my freshman year in college I decided to run a marathon.  6 weeks later I ran a 3:11 at Grandma's Marathon in Duluth (1991) and I was hooked on long distance running where my asthma wasn't as much of a factor.

I noticed that one of your goals is the Rocket City marathon. I am considering running that as well. Do you know anything about the course? I am mostly concerned about hills since most of my training is on flat land. Thanks for any info you have!

Rocket City is pretty flat; the year I ran it, I did most of my training on flat land, and it wasn't too bad at all. The toughest part of the course is the ~5-mile stretch on Baily Cove Road/ Carl T Jones Drive (same road) that has a long, slow grade uphill for a few miles, but that is relatively early in the course (ends right around the halfway point). If I had to choose one marathon to run off of strictly flat land training, it would probably be Rocket City. Go for it, and good luck!

Thanks for the feedback on Rocket City. Everything I have heard is good so I think I will do it.

I agree on flatness. Of all the SE US marathon's I've run (Georgia, Atlanta,Country Music, B'ham) , it is the flattest and probably the fastest. I'm sure Mobile (1st light) is flatter. B'ham is by far the hilliest- its hot several huge inclines but its such an interesting course it is worth it.

Based on all the positive feedback I got, I registered for Rocket City. I am looking forward to checking it out. Thanks!
